More on Miers...

So how do I feel about the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court? I am being cautious at the moment. I am having some mixed feelings about the situation. I am very upset that President Bush nominated another ‘stealth candidate’. Like I said earlier, we do not know anything about Miers and because of that we will not know for sure where she stands on the issues until she is already on the Court. President Bush promised to appoint Justices that were in the mold of conservative Justices Scalia and Thomas. That is a big part of the reason why he won last year’s election. I guess when he said that, I assumed he would be picking people that do have ‘paper trails’ and who were obvious to the public that they were conservatives. I would have felt much better if President Bush went with Janice Rogers Brown, Priscilla Owens, or Edith Jones? But he didn’t and instead chose to go with what he knows.

I was very worried today when I heard the Democrat’s response to President Bush’s nominee. Senator Reid said, “I like Harriet Miers. As White House Counsel, she has worked with me in a courteous and professional manner. I am also impressed with the fact that she was a trailblazer for women as managing partner of a major Dallas law firm and as the first woman president of the Texas Bar Association."

The fact that Senator Reid likes her scares me. Senator Schumer also had comments about Miers today. He said, “It could have been a lot worse" and went on to say that he thought President Bush would have nominated people who were a lot more conservative than Roberts and Miers.

Senator Durbin joined the fun and added that, "I think we may have averted a crisis in the Senate… I think the president heard loud and clear from every Democrat that he had to avoid the more extreme judges that had been named to lower courts, and he did that."

These comments from the Democrats did not make me feel very confident in President Bush’s nomination. However, this afternoon, I started to feel a little better about the situation. I was switching back and forth between Sean Hannity’s and Michael Medved’s radio shows. Michael Medved pointed out how Harriet Miers is a devout Christian and a Sunday school teacher. That is a major positive. He went on to say that she attends a church that proudly falls under the title of “fundamentalist”. I am not quite sure how the liberals are going to feel about that. I foresee attacks and scrutiny on her in the future because of her being a Christian. He said that she believes in originalist ideas about the Bible and the Constitution. That’s exactly what we need, not somebody who will try to legislate laws from the bench.

Sean Hannity talked about President Bush’s friendship with Harriet Miers. While we, the public, may not know very much about Harriet Miers, President Bush knows plenty. President Bush has known her for over ten years. Bush knows that these nominations are defining moments for his Presidency and will affect his legacy. I can’t see him risking ruining that by picking a Justice that could have the possibility of being a liberal.

Other good news about Harriet Miers is that she has defended the unborn in the past. As president of the Texas State Bar, she led a movement to have the American Bar Association end its practice of supporting abortion-on-demand and taxpayer-funded abortions. She will definitely be answering questions about this by Biden, Kennedy, Schumer, and company in the near future. I have no reason to believe that she will not continue to fight for the rights of the unborn in the future.

After all that I have read so far, I still not have formulated an opinion on Harriet Miers. I am being very cautious and will not endorse her with out knowing more information about her. I fear that we may not truly know her views until she is on the court. President Bush has promised to nominate Justices in the mold of Scalia and Thomas. This is why we voted for him, to make this decision that will affect this country for many years to come. I will continue to wait for more information regarding Harriet Miers’ views. Until then, I will have to trust that President Bush will pull through and deliver on his promise to appoint conservative Justices to the Supreme Court. -JW-
